ATV camping is about getting to that remote backcountry campsite and enjoying a couple of days riding, hiking, fishing, sightseeing or just relaxing by the campfire undisturbed. Properly prepared and equipped ATV camping is a very stress-free and enjoyable adventure.
I hear and read comments that it is a hassle loading, riding an ATV loaded with camping gear and unloading at the campsite. Yes, my first trip was a hassle because I was not properly equipped for ATV camping. My ATV was stacked high with camping gear and is was very awkward to ride.
ATV camping is a little like backpacking in that you have to keep things lite and compact but with an ATV your able carry more camping gear and supplies as long as you don’t get carried away. With an ATV you have room for a small cooler, some camping furniture, and some other items you normally would not take backpacking.
With a full size utility 4×4 ATV you can easily carry 100 pounds of camping gear and supplies which is more than enough for a couple of days camping. A good camping checklist will be very helpful in knowing what you need to pack. When loading your ATV you want to be sure to load it within the manufacturers rated load capacities.
All utility ATVs have rated load capacities and it is the responsibility of the rider to keep his/her load within those capacities otherwise you risk damage to the ATV and/or injury to yourself. Also, loading an ATV with camping gear and supplies raises the center of gravity and the rider needs to be extra cautious because the ATV will handle differently with the extra weight. Keeping the load as low as possible will help significantly.
