An essential item for your ATV camping gear that is often overlooked is a good reusable poncho. Ponchos are like raincoats in that they are made of the same waterproof materials such as polyethylene or nylon. Unlike raincoats, however, ponchos do not have sleeves which makes them very versatile.
Now I have talked about how a rainsuit should be part of your ATV riding gear, but a poncho should be part of your ATV camping gear. I actually carry both a rainsuit and a poncho (as a backup) on my ATV. The versatility of a poncho makes it very useful. Since most come with grommets they can also be used as an emergency shelter, a ground tarp for under your sleeping bag or tent and a wind break.
When used while riding an ATV they can drape over other items you don’t want to get wet. I have actually tied the two back corners of my poncho to my rear rack covering my sleeping bag and camping gear. They are also great for covering your backpack, something a rain suit can’t do.
The best part about ponchos are they are light and easy to store. Most fold up flat and take up very little space on an ATV. I keep some rope with my poncho to aid in its versatility for other uses. They are quick and easy to put on and they are pretty much a one-size-fits-all type of garment.
On one camping trip I was using an old 2-person tent and it started to rain. Knowing this tent would probably leak I grabbed my poncho and some rope and covered the top of the tent with the poncho to ensure my gear and I stayed dry that night.
Remember to expect the unexpected. Having a poncho as a regular part of your camping gear gives you some options when the unexpected happens. Plus it will help keep you dry when that inevitable rain storm rains down on your ATV camping adventure. Don’t wait for the rainstorm, Get your new Poncho now.
