A good utility 4×4 ATV enables you to access some deep back country campsites for a couple of days of ATV camping. But some ATVs lack the necessary space for all of your camping gear. By adding some aftermarket ATV racks and baskets to these ATVs gives you the space required for all of your gear.
These aftermarket ATV racks and baskets easily mount to your ATVs existing racks or decks and increase the storage space considerably over the OEM racks. There are a couple different types available, there are racks specifically for the front of an ATV and racks for the rear.
Rear racks and baskets come in different configurations from a regular rack to a drop-down basket. There is also the Gear Master overhead ATV rack system. Some racks are designed to hold tools, guns or bows securely and out of you way as you ride.
Even though these racks are meant to increase your storage you still need to be aware of the ATV manufacturers rated load capacity and take into account the weight of the rack when loading. Always load your ATV evenly between the front and rear racks to balance the load based on the load capacities.
Exercise caution when riding an ATV with aftermarket racks loaded with camping gear and supplies because the extra weight and load dynamics will effect the handling of the machine. Rear drop-down baskets when loaded can make the front end of the ATV want to come up off the ground on bumps if the front rack is not loaded.
Some aftermarket ATV racks and baskets are made from steel tubing with expanded metal so that water will run through and not settle in the rack. While these racks are strong, they tend to be heavy and are susceptible to rust. The alternative are racks made out of aluminum which are strong, lightweight and wont rust.
A good utility 4×4 ATV can easily carry 100 pounds of camping gear if not more. Don’t let the lack of storage space on your ATV cause you to stack your gear so high that riding safely is next to impossible. I was wanting a rear drop basket so I could still use my cargo box and not lose gear space.
I was especially pleased that the new improved drop basket is now in two pieces instead of one big one. This allows me to remove the drop basket for normal trail riding or when it isn’t needed without unbolting the whole basket from my rack.
