ATV Riding Gear differs from rider to rider and from season to season but there is some essential gear that every rider should have and use on every ride. The number one piece of ATV riding gear that every rider should have and use is an ATV helmet. Sometimes I may sound like a broken record about helmet use, it is just common sense.
My old helmets all tell a story of what could have been had I not been wearing them. They are all covered with scraps and gouges. I don’t believe we need a law requiring people to wear helmets but those that decide not to wear one give our sport a bad name. With every helmet a pair of ATV goggles or some sort of eye protection is required, they kind of go hand-in-hand.
A good pair of ATV riding boots protect against simple ankle and foot injuries. Even a good pair of water-proof work boots will help protect the foot and ankle. Tennis shoes offer very little protection for your feet. For winter ATV riding a good pair of thermal insulated, water-proof boots is essential.
A good pair of riding gloves makes a big difference comfort wise on long hard rides, they
protect against blisters and scratches from branches. A good pair of warm thermal gloves for those cold weather ATV rides are a must. Gloves also come in handy when using your ATV winch or loading and unloading your ATV onto a trailer or truck with ATV ramps.
A good durable pair of riding pants is recommended but almost everyone I ride with wears jeans for comfort. A good pair of cargo pants with the big pockets on the legs are very convenient for keeping your cell phone, handheld GPS unit, wallet or what ever else.
Though only needed occasionally, a good rain suit or poncho is worth its weight in gold. If you have ever been on a long ride and got caught in a rain storm without a rain suit you know what I am talking about. Trying to ride at the top of your game while cold and wet is not a very fun ride. Also A dust mask for those dusty trail rides keeps you breathing clean air.
A good water-proof, insulated riding jacket preferably gore-tex will keep you warm and dry on the cold winter rides or just whenever the weather gets cold. I store my jacket and rain gear in my ATV bags so they are there when I need them.
The proper ATV riding gear not only will protect you but can also provide comfort on those long rides. Dressing appropriately for the season will also help keep you comfortable so you can concentrate on your ATV trail ride.
