For most people having a completely different set of camping gear for each trip is not practicable. While each camping trip is unique, much of the same camping gear is used, but there are some exceptions.
For instance my ATV camping gear typically consists of at least:
-
2-Person 3-Season Tent
-
Self-Inflating Pad
-
0° F Mummy Bag
-
Small Cooler
-
Two-Burner Camping Stove
-
Small Set of Camping Cookware w/Coffee Pot
-
Small Tarp
-
Camping Chair
-
Small Camping Table
-
Water Filter
-
Hydration Pack
For cold weather ATV camping I currently use the same gear except I add a closed-cell foam pad for extra insulation from the cold ground. I may look into a 4-season tent and a small tent heater down the road.
For backpacking I use the same gear except no cooler, chair, table or coffee pot and I use a lightweight backpacking stove. I don’t do much backpacking anymore but the gear I have is applicable.
For family camping there is considerably more camping gear and a larger tent. We also bring a three-burner camping stove with more cookware, a larger cooler and a larger folding table. My point here is there is no need for a completely different set of camping gear for each trip unless you can afford it and have the room to store it all.
Much of the gear is interchangeable. For instance I could have a summer sleeping bag and a winter sleeping bag but I opted for a 0° F mummy bag for the cold weather trips and in the summer I just use it zipped open like a blanket.
My 2-person 3-season tent has worked fine for my ATV camping trips but I have not camped in a blizzard or heavy snowstorm yet. For cold weather camping I currently hang my tarp above the tent in case of snow. I would like to do more cold weather camping and therefore I may need to invest in a 4-season tent.
For the average camper that does a little spring and fall camping but mainly summer camping one set of gear will work fine, just add or subtract from it for the number of people camping. Invest in just what you need.
Some people buy all sorts of camping gear and equipment, only to use some of it. For ATV camping use our handy checklists to help you get started. After a couple of trips if you find you need more then do so as long as you know you will use it.
The main thing it that you get outdoors and have fun enjoying the back country without being a financial burden. Camping done right is very inexpensive and the equipment lasts for years if taken care of. Visit CampingATV.com for all of your camping gear needs.
