I have stated before that ATV camping is a lot like primitive camping in that you are camping in the back country at an undeveloped site. But true primitive camping is quite different and takes a trained individual who is an experienced fisherman, hunter and survivalist.
True primitive camping is setting out on foot with the bare minimum in terms of supplies and living off of the back country for a couple of days. I personally only know of a couple of individuals who can truly handle this task. This is roughing it big time and not for the average city folk type of camper.
This type of camping is sometimes tentless, sleeping under the stars in natures back yard. You really don’t know what your next meal will be until it comes around. That is whatever you come upon during your venture, whether it’s a stream with fresh trout, a berry bush or a wild turkey wandering through the forest.
A true understanding of the terrain and wildlife that are native to the region is necessary. The ability to navigate the area without modern conveniences is essential. You will basically be utilizing every outdoor survival skill there is for this type of wilderness camping.
True primitive camping takes a certain mind set and physical endurance to accomplish. Compared to primitive camping, ATV camping is a breeze. Sure we are still camping in the back country at an undeveloped campsite but we have our tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat and the modern conveniences for cooking our camping meals.
Primitive camping utilizes many of the skills of the bushcraft lifestyle such as firecraft, foraging, shelter building, use of hand tools, navigation and first aid. Learning to be one with nature and efficiently using its resources to survive. Primitive camping is for the extreme hardcore camper.
So if you think ATV camping is a little too primitive for you, you couldn’t be more wrong. For those of you that are hardcore primitive campers I applaud you for your knowledge and skills. Maybe we will cross paths one day while out in the back country.

Always remember to bring a few things with you, even with an ATV. You never know when your ATV will break down. And trust me, in the mountains, you are NOT going to trek 25+ miles in a day and make it out easily.
1) A good, sharp, strong knife that is easily accessible. *Always on your person, not stored away in some box that will never help you in an emergency.
2) Some sort of way to light something. If your a smoker, and keep it dry, you are a survivalists wet dream. If not, Keep a magnesium bar or a commercial firestarter (use the back of your knife to produce spark. There are 100′s of kits out there that you can simply put into your box, hell the air box of your quad if you have to)
3) The ability to keep calm under pressure.
There’s millions of pages of information you can find on all of this stuff on the internet. It can save your life.
Otherwise, like this guy says, ATV camping is cake, Take a few tarps, take some jerky, a sleeping bag, and a good attitude, you’ll be fine.
