The first snow of the season came early this year. Where I live in Colorado we usually don’t get our first snow until after Halloween. But this year it’s early, dropping about four inches of heavy wet snow. A heavy snow like this causes havoc on the trees that still have their leaves so I was out early trying to knock the snow off of all of the sagging branches.

First Snow of the SeasonThe change of seasons has different meanings to different people. Some see the shorter days and longer nights as a time for more rest and remaining indoors trying to stay warm. Their ATVs are prepped and put away in ATV winter storage.

Others, like me, use their ATVs all year long for ATV snow plowing and going on ATV snow rides. My ATV is a work horse as well as a recreational toy. As long as you understand the risks of winter ATV riding and ATV camping in cold weather it can be great fun.

I have ridden and camped in all types of weather from rain, sleet, hail, snow, blizzards and extreme temperatures. The weather just adds another element to the challenge of ATV riding and in most cases I enjoy the ride a lot more. With the first snow of the season coming earlier maybe we might be getting a lot of snow this year.

In Colorado it’s hard to tell what the weather is going to do because it changes so fast. You can have a blizzard one day and the next day sunny with temperatures in the 70′s. When I plan a ride you just have to go for it no matter what the weather is doing.

ATV Snow RideThe nice thing about the colder months is you don’t have to travel far to go ATV riding. The trails along the front range are usually very crowded during the summer months but during the colder months there is very little traffic especially if there is snow on the ground.

The same is true about ATV camping in cold weather, you don’t have to travel far for an uncrowded campsite. I would like to do more ATV winter camping but it is hard to get everyone’s schedules to match. With everyone’s kids back in school and participating in different school sports and activities just makes it harder to schedule.

The seasons are changing and the first snow has come and gone. Adjusting to the different riding and camping conditions of the different seasons is easy if you are properly prepared. At CampingATV.com we help people get properly prepared for any season of ATV riding and ATV camping.
