I find nothing better than an uncrowded back country campsite next to a lake or stream with family and friends. The ATV has become has become an invaluable addition to the back country hunters gear. Just like ATV camping, an ATV enables the hunter to get to some deep remote back country areas not accessible by a full size vehicle. ATV Hunting enables the hunter to easily carry all of their hunting/camping gear in and haul their kill out.

This Labor Day weekend was our 2011 annual Taylor Park camping trip. This year we camped east of the little town of Tin Cup, Colorado. Originally called Virginia City, Tin Cup was a mining town back in the1880′s through the 1890′s with almost 2,000 residents at its peak. By 1920 the town only had a few residents.

For most people having a completely different set of camping gear for each trip is not practicable. While each camping trip is unique, much of the same camping gear is used, but there are some exceptions.

One of the great things about ATV camping is the ability to carry a cooler to keep your drinks cold and your perishable food from spoiling. Hard-sided coolers are nice but can be rather cumbersome on an ATV. They are heavy and sometimes difficult to secure to the ATV. Soft-Sided Coolers are much more manageable for ATV Camping.

Hog Park Reservoir is in the southern part of Wyoming in Medicine Bow National Forest and this was the location for ATV Camping the last week of July. There were only three of us and we actually started out on our ATVs about 40 miles south in Colorado at the Seedhouse Trailhead in Routt National Forest.

I received a call the other day from a guy inquiring information about ATV camping areas. As we talked it was very apparent that this guy was an avid outdoorsman and even used to raced hair scrambles in the south like me. He quit racing to join the Army and unfortunately he lost his right leg and sustained other injuries from a land mine in Iraq in 2004.

The fatal grizzly bear attack earlier this month in Yellowstone was determined to be a mama bear protecting her young. Because of this natural inherent act the bears life was spared. While this was a tragic event is should serve as a reminder of the dangers of the back country. Wild animals are just that wild and unpredictable.
