Riding ATVs is one of my favorite activities and I like long and hard rides. I also enjoy just being outdoors and to help keep me in shape for ATVing I hike and enjoy Trail Running. Not only is it good for you physically but it also helps to improve your mental and spiritual health.
I live in a rural area and my families house backs up to 160 acres of private land covered with trees and hills. On almost any day you can find me and my dogs out there in the morning running and hiking a few trail miles. It’s funny that we have a treadmill in our basement but I prefer to be outdoors as I enjoy the view better and find it has a very calming effect on me.
It does not matter if it is hot or cold, sunny or snowing, I am out there almost every day, except for rainy days (you gotta draw the line somewhere). It’s great exercise and it provides an awesome cardio workout. This along with the rest of my workout really helps me to improve my ATV fitness and ride my ATV at the top of my game.
Because I am out there almost everyday I feel I am kind of the caretaker of the property as I pickup trash, mend fences and pile branches. I am a firm believer in leaving the area better than you found it. After ten years of hiking and trail running this area I still see new things I never noticed before.
While I am running I find my mind is filled with random simple thoughts. Sometimes I try to think about work or a problem I may be having but find my mind always wanders back to the simple things. I have come to realize not to fight it and let the trail and all of its wonders control my thoughts.
I find trail running more effective than standard jogging around the block. Trail Running has more diverse terrain and hills which I feel does more for strengthening your ankles and legs. When I am done with my run I feel refreshed and ready to finish the rest of my work out. This is all part of what I do to stay fit for riding plus it’s good for both my mind and body.
